InterClass for schools
InterClass gives a school a controlled way for students to message each other during lunch and brunch. The school decides when messaging is on, only students with school email addresses can join, and a parent or guardian has to confirm consent for each student before messaging with friends works.
What the school controls
- When messaging is on. Staff set the start and end time, days and time zone of each lunch and brunch window, and choose which window counts as lunch.
- Who can join. Sign-in is limited to your school's own student email domain.
- Parent consent. A parent or guardian links to each student and confirms consent before the student can message friends.
- Staff access. Staff sign in with a password and a second verification code.
What students can and can't do
- Message friends they've both approved, one-to-one, during the school's windows.
- Send a quick ping to a friend during lunch.
- Message their linked parent or guardian at any time.
- Send text only: no links, photos, videos, files or group chats.
- Messages with inappropriate language are blocked before they send, and message text is stored encrypted.
Getting started
- Share your student email domain, for example students.yourschool.org.
- We set up your school and a staff account for the person who manages the schedule.
- Staff set the lunch and brunch windows for your actual bell schedule.
- Students sign up with their school Google accounts, and parents link using the parent code in their child's account.
InterClass is currently in a pilot, so we're onboarding schools one at a time. To talk about your school, email interclasseducation@gmail.com.
Questions schools ask
Who can join our school's InterClass?
Only students with an email address on your school's student email domain. Google sign-up and sign-in are checked against that domain, and a student has to choose your school first.
Who decides when students can message?
Your staff do. They set the start time, end time, days and time zone of each lunch and brunch window, and peer messaging only works inside those windows.
Do parents have to agree?
Yes. A student's messaging with friends stays off until a parent or guardian has linked to their account and confirmed consent.
How do staff sign in?
With an email and password plus a second verification code from an authenticator app.
