1. What InterClass is
InterClass is a Progressive Web App built for one pilot school to give students a supervised, time-limited way to message friends during lunch and brunch, and to give parents a way to message their own child. It is not a general-purpose chat app: peer (student-to-student) messaging and the Ping feature only work during staff-configured lunch/brunch windows; parent-to-student messaging is available any time, but is fully logged; an admin is expected to actively watch the staff dashboard during live windows; and every account, message attempt, and moderation action is logged. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what is collected and who can see it.
InterClass is only available to current students, parents/guardians, and staff of [School Name]. It is not open to the public and is not a substitute for the school's official communication channels.
2. Eligibility and accounts
- Students sign in with their school Google account (the same one used on school-issued Chromebooks); only accounts on [School Name]'s Google Workspace domain can sign up. There is no separate InterClass password for students. One account per student.
- Parents/guardians create their own account and must be approved by school staff before a connection to a specific student is activated. See our Privacy Policy for the consent process.
- Staff accounts are created only by the school's designated InterClass admin.
- You must provide accurate information and keep your password confidential. You are responsible for activity on your account.
- Accounts are for the individual named on them only; do not share your login or create an account using someone else's identity.
3. Acceptable use
When using InterClass, you agree not to send, or attempt to send, content that:
- Is hateful, racist, or derogatory toward a person or group;
- Bullies, harasses, threatens, or demeans another student;
- References self-harm, suicide, sexual violence, or abuse in a way meant to harm, threaten, or target someone (if you or someone else is in danger, contact a trusted adult, staff member, or emergency services immediately; InterClass is not a crisis service);
- Is sexually explicit;
- Shares another person's private information without their consent;
- Contains links, images, or file attachments (InterClass is text-only, on purpose).
InterClass runs an automated filter that blocks messages matching these categories before they are sent, and logs the attempt for staff review. Attempting to bypass, evade, or repeatedly test this filter is itself a violation of these Terms, separate from whatever the underlying message said.
Beyond blocked content, students may also block another student from messaging them at any time, and may report a specific message directly to school staff. Staff can suspend or deactivate any account for violating these Terms.
4. No expectation of private, unmonitored messaging
InterClass is a supervised tool, not a private messaging app. By using it, you understand and agree that every message you send is logged and retained for a period described in our Privacy Policy; messages that trip the content filter, or that another student reports, are visible in full to school staff, regardless of channel; parent-to-student messages are logged the same way peer messages are; school staff can see an aggregated pattern flag (e.g. a student who's been messaging or pinging others with nothing coming back over the last two weeks) even when nothing was ever flagged or reported, though not a full log of every ordinary message; and staff access to the dashboard is itself logged.
Do not put anything in an InterClass message you would not want a staff member, or in some circumstances a parent/guardian, to eventually see.
5. Availability and changes
InterClass is a pilot prototype. It may be unavailable, reset, or changed without notice while in this pilot phase. Peer messaging and Ping are only available during the lunch/brunch windows staff configure, which may change during the school year. We may suspend, modify, or discontinue InterClass, or any feature of it, at any time.
6. Termination
We may suspend or deactivate any account for violating these Terms, at staff's discretion, without prior notice, especially where student safety is a concern. A parent/guardian may request their child's account (or their own) be deactivated at any time by contacting the admin.
7. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
InterClass is provided "as is," as a pilot prototype, without warranties of any kind. It has not been independently audited for security or reviewed against FERPA, COPPA, or [School Name]'s own data-handling policies as of the effective date above. To the fullest extent permitted by law, [Your Name / Business Entity] is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of InterClass. Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including in connection with a student's safety.
8. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as InterClass changes. Material changes will be communicated to the school's admin, who is responsible for notifying families as appropriate. Continued use of InterClass after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
9. Governing law and contact
These Terms are governed by the laws of [Governing State]. Questions about these Terms can be directed to [Your Name / Email] or to [School Name]'s InterClass admin, [Admin Name / Title].
